Invent Place Value

Tally marks in fives work for twenty or thirty. A herd of a few hundred cattle, or a storehouse of grain, needs something better.

You will invent a sign that stands for a whole group, then a sign for a group of groups. Then you will follow that idea through numerals people really used, until the place a sign is written in is enough to say what it is worth.
