Write it the Roman way
Later European counting boards, and probably Roman ones too, had one more feature: a space between two lines, worth five pebbles of the line below. Then no line ever needs more than four pebbles.
Tidy the board: pick five pebbles on a line, and they become one in the space above it. Then press Write it down, and each pebble is written as the letter of its place. There are 3 rounds.
