Tie them in tens
A tally in fives is fine for twenty or thirty cattle. A herdsman with a hundred or more needs something better.
Here is an idea. Whenever you have ten strokes, replace them with one new sign: a loop of rope, like the hobble used to tie a cow’s legs. One hobble stands for ten strokes.
Tap marks to pick ten strokes’ worth, and they are tied into a hobble. Keep going until fewer than ten strokes are left. There are 2 rounds.
